When installers trialled Knauf’s latest range of brown insulation roll based on ECOSE technology, many of them didn’t believe they were handling glass wool. Who can blame them? ECOSE mineral wool doesn’t look or feel like anything you’ve used before.
Let’s start with that supersoft feel. It comes from using a formaldehyde-free binder derived from renewable organic materials. Unlike traditional mineral wools, ECOSE technology isn’t based on petroleum-based chemicals. It’s also up to 70% less energy-intensive than the binders used in traditional insulation materials - and much softer to the touch.
NATURALLY BROWN, NATURALLY GOOD The other big difference is the colour. Knauf’s ECOSE mineral wools are an organic-looking brown. It’s no gimmick; that’s the natural, dye-free colour that comes out of the process. In fact Knauf are so proud of their brown credentials, they’re packing ECOSE in transparent packaging emblazoned with helpful product names (eg ‘Loft Roll’) that tell you exactly what you’re handling.
SAME PERFORMANCE, JUST BROWNER (AND GREENER) ECOSE technology is better all round. Its acoustic and thermal performance is as good as traditional mineral wool, it has an A1 fire classification, it’s highly compressible which cuts transportation costs, it’s part made from recycled glass bottles, and the manufacturing process is formaldehyde-free. Even before ECOSE, mineral wool was rated the most environmentally friendly insulation by independent judges such as the BRE Green Guide. With ECOSE, Knauf glass wool achieves a better than A+ rating.
